Educational assistive technology service delivery system for high school and university students with disability in Taiwan

The purpose of educational devices service delivery system is to improve disabled students' learning efficiency via assistive technology. This service delivery system consist of professional assessment, device of loan, fitting, adjustment, repair, and recycle service for high school and university students with disability in Taiwan.

Ministry of Education entrust three organizations to set up educational assistive technology center and execute the above-mentioned service. These three educational assistive technology centers provide assistive technology service to vision, hearing and physical (or other than vision and hearing) impaired students respectively. The educational AT centers also purchase or adjust recycle devices to make sure the products meet the needs of students. Furthermore, the center hold regional workshops, outreach programs, speeches and assistive device demonstrations for teachers working with disable students at school to increase their knowledge and skills.

Municipality and county/city governments

In School Year 2016, there were 15,844 students with disabilities served by teaching assistants in senior high and vocational high schools, junior high schools and elementary schools governed by municipality and county/city governments. For the types of disabilities receiving teaching assistant, students with intellectual disabilities had the highest rate, with 4,655 receiving services, followed by students with Autism (n = 3,268), and students with multiple disabilities (n = 2,105). In terms of geographical location of the municipalities, New Taipei City had the highest rate, with 3,977 receiving services, followed by Taipei City 2,307, and Taichung City had 2,178 receiving services.

K-12 education administration of MOE

In School Year 2016, there were 2,624 students with disabilities served by teaching assistants at senior high and vocational high schools, and special educational schools governed by K-12 Education Administration of MOE. For the types of disabilities, students with intellectual disabilities had the highest rate, with 944 receiving services, followed by student with Autism with 846, and student with multiple disabilities had 683 receiving services.
